The story of Santhosha Vidhyalaya is deeply intertwined with the enduring legacy of the Dohnavur Fellowship, a sanctuary founded by the beloved Amy Carmichael, affectionately known as Amma. Amy Carmichael devoted her life to serving the vulnerable, rescuing children from distress, and establishing a haven of love, faith, and holistic development at Dohnavur. Her mission extended far beyond immediate care—she envisioned a transformative movement that would impact multiple fields, including Child Development, Education, Healthcare, Community Development, and Nature Conservation.
Amy firmly believed in the power of education as a tool to shape the future and uplift communities. The Dohnavur Fellowship became a beacon of hope, dedicated to holistic development and helping young minds to grow in wisdom and strength. Inspired by this ethos, the need for quality education for Christian workers children became a pressing concern.
In the late 1970s, Christian workers from all over India ventured into remote villages, serving communities amidst immense hardships. However, a deep concern burdened their hearts—the lack of access to quality education for their children.
It was during one such moment that Prof. Ivan Balasingh was invited to preach at the “Meetings of Vision,” that was held every December at Dohnavur. As he stood in the midst of serene, tidy, and orderly surroundings, a profound question gripped his heart: “You are taking care of one missionary child, but what about the hundreds of others? Who will care for them?” This question did not fade; instead, it grew stronger with time. As he engaged in deep discussions with Ms. Margaret Wilkinson, Mr. G. David Aruldasan, and Ms. Eleanor D. Backhouse—leaders of the Dohnavur Fellowship—the seeds of a new vision began to take root. Their shared passion for serving these families led to the birth to Santhosha Vidhyalaya in 1982.
Through prayer, reflection, and the support of several mission organizations and their leaders, the need for a school became evident. In October 1981, a Society was established to oversee the creation of a co-educational English-medium boarding school.
Pioneers like Prof. Vedasironmani (retired Principal of St. John’s College, Palayamkottai) and Mr. Nelson Devadoss (retired District Education Officer) joined this effort, bringing invaluable expertise to this transformative project.
The name Santhosha, meaning “happiness,” was chosen to reflect the school’s vision: to provide a nurturing and joyful home for children far from their families.
On June 5, 1982, Santhosha Vidhyalaya opened its doors in the ‘Vanacharbu Compound’ of the Dohnavur Fellowship campus. Starting with 36 students in standards I to V and nine dedicated staff members, the school marked the beginning of a new chapter. Dr. Theodore Srinivasan of IEM presided over the inaugural ceremony, while the school’s first Correspondent, Professor Ivan Balasingh, played a pivotal role in shaping its early years.
The guiding principles of serenity, discipline, simplicity, and excellence—deeply rooted in the Dohnavur Fellowship’s values—continue to shape Santhosha Vidhyalaya’s identity. Over the years, the school has grown into a center of academic excellence, providing holistic education while instilling faith, character, and service-oriented leadership in every student.
