Amy Carmicheal
Founder, Dohnavur Fellowship

Amy Wilson Carmichael (16th Dec 1867 – 18th Jan 1951) was born in Ireland, and served in India for 56 years till her death. Amy travelled to Japan for fifteen months, but fell ill and returned home. After a brief period of service in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), she went to Bangalore, India for her health and found her lifelong vocation.  She founded ‘The Dohnavur Fellowship’ in 1901 to save children from moral and physical danger.  The Fellowship had become a place of sanctuary for thousands of children who would otherwise have faced a very bleak future.  She founded the Hospital in 1936 to reach out to the needs of thousands of rural folk who did not have access to any sort of medical care.

Innumerable people have received both physical and spiritual healing through this medical mission work.

Amy lived a life of faith and was always dependent upon God to supply all her needs.  She was dedicated in her devotional and prayer life.  Amy was rendered bed- bound by her injury for the last 20 years of her life.  Not to be discouraged by pain, she seized the opportunity to demonstrate His faithfulness before a much larger host of witnesses.  Now she had the quiet time that allowed her to write books, poems and letters, that were translated and shared around the world.  Her writings continue to influence and inspire the lives of many individuals even today.

Today, Amma’s legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, who, of their own free will, continue to serve through the Dohnavur Fellowship. They are committed to holistic development, leading initiatives across various fields, including Child Development, Education, Healthcare, Community Development, and Nature Conservation.
